The three definitions of Universality (according to Dictionary.com) are:
"1. the character or state of being universal; existence or prevalence everywhere.
2. relation, extension, or applicability to all.
3. universal character or range of knowledge, interests, etc."

In my own words, Universality means an idea, character, book, technique, fact, et cetera* that is commonly known and accepted by the general population. I see an example of universality in the books Their Eyes Were Watching God and 1984. These books are widely known by the general public through school, peers, friends, family, internet, and other such sources. Almost everyone you encounter today has either had to read the book for school, read it for fun, or knows about it from a friend or family member. The two books are very universal. 1984 embodies a fear felt by many around the globe at the time of its creation. The fear was the fear of communism and socialism spreading throughout the world and having it be a complete wastland of a society.

Here is a picture to help you remember:

* et cetera is a word from Latin meaning so on and so forth. Usually abbreviated etc.

  1. I like the definition in your own words. I think universality is important because if an author is able to make their book univeral their books are read by so many different people from different places and that's great. I think with everyones differences we sometimes forget about what does make us the same, and being universal is all about "existence or prevalence everywhere", like you said.

  2. I really liked how the explanation was simple and concise. I also like the example and how it nicely fits the term. An example of universality is that is can be agreed upon that getting out of our comfort zone can be scary for most humans.

  3. I think you explained this really well especially how you used 1984 and explained how it is universal as it 'embodies a fear felt by many around the globe.' And I think having universality is a very important aspect because it can connect to many people around the globe making it more likely to be read and well known.

  4. I liked how you had definitions from a online dictionary and than put it in your own words. It made a lot of sense! You explained your examples well too. Another example of universality is the fear of losing a family, there are many stories made around the world about a loss of a loved one. I think universality is important because it shows everyone on the globe is governed by the same human natures. And like what Donna said, it connects people when literature is able to reach all people in the world.
